What Is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) employs herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (Tui na), exercise (qigong), and dietary therapy to free the vital flow of energy (chi) and achieve balance. Its history goes back 5000 years, and though it retains some semblance of its roots, it has evolved over the years. In the 1970s, with that decade's emphasis on natural and holistic approaches, TCM caught on in the United States. About 40% of Americans today have used some sort of TCM. The Chinese have also used it for thousands of years on animals. Americans, being convinced of the benefits for themselves, naturally want to share it with their pets to obtain optimum quality of life for them, too.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatments for Pets
Acupuncture. Fine needles are inserted into specified points where nerve bundles and blood vessels intersect, to set free the flow of energy throughout the body. It improves circulation and stimulates the nervous system. Using acupuncture a trained vet can alleviate the pain of arthritis, treat hip dysplasia, and extend range of motion in your pet.
Herbal Remedies. Herbs are roots, blossoms, mushrooms, berries, and a myriad of other plants. Used singly or in combination with other herbs, they are formulated to treat epilepsy, chronic kidney failure, hormonal dysfunction, skin ailments, liver failure, and inflammatory bowel disease. For pets, they usually come in pill form. Because of potential interactions, only a qualified veterinarian should administer herbs after rendering a diagnosis.
Massage Therapy. Most of us love that relaxed yet stimulated feeling we get with a deep massage, but have you ever thought about it for your pet? Although it may be a relatively new notion in the United States, there are Egyptian hieroglyphics depicting pet massage. Just as for humans, it can relieve tension, increase circulation, reduce pain, drain toxins, and have a calming effect. A working knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics for each species is necessary.
Chiropractic Treatment. Chiropractic treatment of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems can be accomplished without drugs or surgery. When your pet's spine is out of alignment, it can affect other systems and bodily functions. Adjustments can relieve pain, improve flexibility, and unleash the body's natural capacity to heal.
